Import a project¶
An export archive can be brought back into Ekit: on another account, after a migration, or to start from a ready-made project. The import always creates a new project. Your existing projects are never modified.
How to import¶
- Open the projects menu in the sidebar and choose Import a project. While your account has no project yet, use the ▾ button next to New project, or the link or import a project (.zip) in the onboarding checklist.
- Drop the
.ziparchive in the window, or click to choose it. - Ekit analyzes the archive and shows a summary, without writing anything yet:
- the number of tables, entries, sites and files, and the project languages;
- the limits of your plan the archive would exceed, if any;
- the secrets to enter again;
- the points worth knowing, for example a file that was removed or a custom domain that is not carried over.
- Choose the name of the new project. By default it is the original name followed by (import). Then click Import.
- A progress bar follows the import. You can close the window: the import continues on the server, and the project appears in your list when it is done. At the end, Open the project switches to it.
If you close the window at the summary step, the uploaded archive is deleted from the server.
What is imported¶
| Imported | Not imported |
|---|---|
| Project name, description, languages and default language | Custom domains (set them up again in the site settings) |
| Tables and fields, with their order, title field and required flags | Secret values: the archive only lists their names |
| Entries in every language, with their address (slug) | Collaborators and invitations |
| Relations and options between entries | Site version history |
| Files and images of entries | AI usage and billing data |
| Site code: views, layouts, partials, i18n, assets | |
| Site Methods |
Every table, field, entry and site gets a new identifier. Relations, options, file addresses and site settings are updated to point to the new ones, so the imported project works on its own right away.
After the import¶
- Secrets: open each site listed in the summary and fill in its secrets in the Secrets panel. Methods that use them fail until the secrets are set.
- Custom domain: connect it again if the site should be served on your own domain (see Custom domain).
- Preview: open the site in the editor to check its pages.
Checks and corrections¶
The archive is checked before anything is written, then once more when you confirm. The import is all or nothing: if a step fails, everything created so far is removed and your account is left as it was.
Some issues are corrected automatically and listed in the summary:
- an entry address already used by another entry of the same table gets a number, for example
my-article-2. Each entry keeps one address, the same in every language; - a table without an identifier gets one created from its name;
- a relation or an option pointing to an entry missing from the archive is removed;
- a file whose format is not allowed, or whose content does not match its extension, is removed, together with its reference in the entry. Files follow the same rules as uploads from the Studio.
An archive is refused with a clear message when it is not an Ekit export (ekit-export/1), when it is damaged, or when it contains unsafe paths.
Limits¶
- Your plan applies: the new project counts in your projects, and its sites, tables, fields per table, entries and languages must fit the limits of your plan. When they do not, the summary lists what exceeds them and See plans shows the options; nothing is imported. See Plans & limits.
- One import at a time per account, and 10 archive imports per day. Templates do not count: you can browse them and create projects from them freely (within your plan).
- Archive: 500 MB maximum, 20,000 files at most, 50 MB per file.
Start from a template¶
Ekit offers ready-to-use projects: a SaaS landing page with a blog, a restaurant website and a studio portfolio. Each one contains a few tables with sample content, images, and a bilingual site.
- Pick a template:
- on a new account, the dashboard shows the templates right away: click one;
- otherwise, open the projects menu and choose Start from a template (with no project yet, use the ▾ button next to New project).
- The same summary as an import is shown: what will be created, and the limits of your plan if the template does not fit them.
- Choose the project name, then click Create the project.
The template becomes a regular project, with its relations, sample entries and a working site: edit its tables, content and pages freely, then preview the site or connect a custom domain. Templates fit the limits of the Free plan (3 tables, 2 languages), but the Free plan allows one project: if you already have one, the summary says so and See plans shows the options.
