Fields

A table is made of fields — its columns. Each field has a type (text, number, image, relation…) that decides how values are edited in the Studio and how they are returned to your sites and to the Public API.

Add a field

In a table, click Add a field — the + at the end of the column headers. The New field panel opens:

Option What it does
Title Name of the field, shown as the column header (at least 2 characters).
Description Short help shown as a tooltip in the entry form. Required.
Data type The kind of value the field holds — see Field types.
Source category For Relation and Category fields only: the table whose entries can be selected.
Minimum / Maximum For Text and Long text only: minimum and maximum number of characters, checked in the entry form.
Title column Makes this field the title of the table — see Title column.
Multilingual One value per language — see Multilingual fields. Shown when the project has several languages, for text fields.
Required The entry form cannot be validated while the field is empty. In the grid, the column is marked with * but you are not forced to fill it in.

To edit a field later, open it from its column header.

Field types

Type Stores Edited with
Text A single line of text Text input
Long text Several lines of plain text Text area (popup editor in the grid)
Rich text Formatted HTML: headings, bold, lists, links, colors, alignment… Rich text editor
Number A number Number input
Date A calendar date Date picker
Date and time A date with a time Date and time picker
Boolean True or false Checkbox (double-click a cell in the grid)
Email An email address Email input, shown as a link
Link An external or internal URL URL input, shown as a link
Color A color Color picker
File An image, a document, an audio or a video file Upload — see below
Location A point on a map (latitude and longitude) Map with address search — see below
Relation Links to one or more entries of another table Relation picker
Category One choice among the entries of another table Drop-down list; can show the table as columns
Tags A list of keywords Keywords separated by commas, shown as chips

Files — one file per field, up to 50 MB:

Kind Formats
Images JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, SVG, HEIC, BMP, TIFF — a thumbnail is created automatically
Documents PDF, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), OpenDocument (.odt, .ods, .odp), text (.txt), CSV
Audio / video MP3, MP4, WebM

Choose or drop the file in the entry form, or use the upload button of the cell in the grid. Images open in a viewer; other files are downloaded. For security, Ekit checks the real content of each file, not only its extension, and refuses Office files containing macros (.docm, .xlsm, .pptm) as well as older formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt), archives and executables.

In a site, {{ekdbasset this.field}} returns the address of the file: use it in an <img>, a <video> or a download link — see Helpers & variables.

Relations and categories — both point to the entries of a source table, shown by their title column. Use a Relation for several links (an article's authors), a Category for a single choice (an article's category, managed in its own table).

Choose the type when you create the field

Changing the type of a field that already contains data does not convert the existing values. If you need another type, create a new field and copy the values.

Location fields

A location is saved as [latitude, longitude] (for example [48.858260, 2.294501]). In the entry form, and in the window opened from the grid, you can place the point in several ways:

  • search an address or a place and press Enter (or Search), then pick a result — addresses come from OpenStreetMap;
  • click the map, or drag the marker;
  • type the latitude and longitude (a comma or a point as decimal separator);
  • use my location: the position given by your browser, if you allow it.

Remove clears the location; Open in Google Maps shows the point in a new tab. In the grid, a location appears as its coordinates with a pin.

In a template, read the two values of the list: {{this.location.[0]}} (latitude) and {{this.location.[1]}} (longitude).

Title column

Each table has one title column — the field that names its entries:

  • it is pinned to the left of the grid;
  • it is the field used by the quick search of the table;
  • it labels the entries in relations and categories of other tables;
  • it is used as the title of the cards created by Show on my site.

The first field of a table automatically becomes its title column. Ticking Title column on another field moves the title to that field. A title column cannot be deleted: choose another title column first.

Multilingual fields

In a project with several languages, a multilingual field stores one value per language; other fields store a single value shared by all languages. Text, Long text and Rich text fields can be multilingual (new text fields are multilingual by default in a multilingual project).

To edit another language, change the input language in the header (for example EN → FR): the grid and forms then show and save that language. In a language other than the default one, empty multilingual cells are marked as to translate.

AI translation — when you save, Ekit translates multilingual texts into the languages where they are still empty. Existing translations are never overwritten: if you change the source text later, update the other languages yourself. Translation has daily limits — see Plans & limits.

Field order

Drag a column header to another position: the new order is saved as soon as you release it. It is used by the grid and the entry form.

Slugs

Each field (and each table) gets a slug — the technical name used in templates ({{this.title}}), datasources and the Public API. It is generated automatically after the first save: the title is translated into English and converted to a lowercase, URL-safe name, made unique within the table (title, title-2…).

The slug is shown in the field panel with a copy button. Regenerate slug creates a new one from the current title.

Regenerating a slug can break your sites

Templates, datasources and applications that use the old slug stop finding the field. Update them after regenerating.

Delete a field

Open the field from its column header and delete it. The values of this field are removed from every entry of the table — this cannot be undone. Export the project first if you may need them.

Limits

The number of fields per table and of entries per project depends on the owner's plan — see Plans & limits.
